Hot water or industrial central heating boiler in a combined set-up

Would you like to use biogas, syngas or liquid residual streams to heat your processes and buildings, but a single energy source isn’t always enough to meet the full heat demand? Or would you like to flexibly switch between different thermal technologies on your site?

With a combined set-up, you bring several heat-producing installations together in a single integrated system. This makes the most of your available energy streams and ensures a continuous heat supply, even when a particular fuel is temporarily less available.

The Callens Group specialists design, build and integrate combined set-ups that are fully matched to your heat demand, available energy sources and future growth plans.

When is a hot water or industrial central heating boiler in a combined set-up worthwhile?

Companies with access to several energy sources, such as natural gas, electricity, biogas, syngas, liquid residual streams or recovered heat, can make these work together intelligently with a combined set-up. This makes it possible to consistently deploy the most suitable energy source, based on availability, cost, efficiency or sustainability goals.

Reasons to choose a combined set-up:

  • You want to be less dependent on a single fuel.
  • You have easy access to several energy sources on your site.
  • You are looking for maximum operational reliability and redundancy.
  • You want to keep using existing installations.
  • You want to optimize energy costs.

Technical specifications of hot water or industrial central heating boilers in a combined set-up

Every combined set-up is fully matched to your available energy sources, heat demand and your site’s business strategy.

It factors in the required output, the desired temperatures, the operating hours and the interaction between the different heat producers.

To do so, our engineers develop an integrated solution with a tailored control strategy and central control.

BENEFITS

Advantages of a hot water or industrial central heating boiler in a combined set-up

A combined set-up offers companies maximum flexibility to make optimal use of different energy sources.

Maximum flexibility

Multiple heat sources can work together within a single central hot water system.

Higher operational reliability

When one installation is temporarily unavailable, other heat sources can take over production.

Less dependent on a single fuel

The heat supply remains less sensitive to price fluctuations and supply risks.

Step-by-step sustainability

New technologies can be added step by step without immediately replacing existing installations.

Lower energy costs

With a combined set-up, you can easily switch from one fuel to another depending on the energy cost.

Optimal use of available energy

Available residual streams and alternative fuels are valorized to the maximum.

What is the difference between a combined set-up, a dual-fuel boiler and a hybrid hot water or industrial central heating system?

These terms are often used interchangeably, but they refer to three different concepts.

A hot water or industrial central heating system in a combined set-up:

A combined set-up consists of two or more separate hot water or industrial central heating boilers that each use their own energy source and together meet the total heat demand. For example, a gas-fired boiler can be combined with a biogas boiler, a hydrogen boiler or a boiler running on liquid residual streams. Each installation retains its own function and characteristics.

A dual-fuel hot water or industrial central heating boiler:

With a dual-fuel boiler, there is one boiler with one burner that can automatically switch between two fuels, for example natural gas and biogas or natural gas and hydrogen.

A hybrid hot water or industrial central heating system:

A hybrid hot water or industrial central heating system combines different technologies within a single integrated energy system, for example a gas-fired boiler with an electric hot water or industrial central heating system. An intelligent control system automatically determines which technology is used at any given moment.

FAQ

Questions? We have the answers.

Yes. In many cases, an existing hot water or industrial central heating boiler is retained and supplemented with additional technology, such as an electric, biogas-fired or hydrogen-fired installation. This maximizes the value of the existing investment while further improving the sustainability of the heat supply. Want to know what expansion possibilities there are for your current hot water or industrial central heating boiler? The Callens Group specialists are happy to look into it with you.

That will depend on the available energy streams. Common combinations are natural gas, electricity, biogas, syngas, hydrogen, liquid residual streams and energy recovery.

As an EPCS integrator, the Callens Group takes care of the entire process: from on-site analysis and engineering to installation and service. Find out more about the different steps in our workflow here.

Because several boilers are available, heat production usually remains operational when one installation is temporarily out of service for maintenance or because of a breakdown. This significantly reduces the risk of production loss. Are you looking for more heat production redundancy? Our experts are happy to advise you on the possibilities.
