Electric thermal oil boiler

An electric thermal oil boiler directly converts electricity into process heat, without the need to burn fossil fuels and, hence, without direct emissions on site. It is a reliable and energy-efficient alternative to conventional gas-fired installations.

The Callens Group helps you with the technical and economic assessment and develops a solution tailored to your heat demand, energy infrastructure and sustainability targets.

When is an electric thermal oil boiler attractive?

An electric thermal oil boiler is especially attractive if you want to make your process heat more sustainable and reduce your dependence on fossil fuels.

Its feasibility will, among other things, depend on available electrical capacity, energy prices, the required thermal output and the number of operating hours. Availability of your own renewable energy supply or electricity surpluses also plays an important role in the business case.

Because there is no combustion, there are no flue gases, chimneys or direct CO2 and NOx emissions on site.

Reasons to consider an electric thermal oil boiler:

  • You want to phase out the use of fossil fuels.
  • You want to reduce the CO2 emissions of your heat production on site.
  • You have sufficient electrical capacity or are exploring a grid upgrade.
  • You want to convert electricity surpluses or green power into usable process heat.
  • You want to deploy this boiler whenever electricity is most attractive.

BENEFITS

Advantages of an electric thermal oil boiler

More and more companies are exploring how to electrify their process heat. Electric thermal oil boilers can be an important building block within that energy transition, since they produce heat without local combustion.

Lower emissions

No combustion in the boiler and, hence, no direct flue gas emissions.

Fast controllability

The power can be precisely matched to the process’s current heat demand.

High efficiency

Electricity is converted into heat very efficiently.

Fewer fossil fuels

Heat production becomes less dependent on natural gas or other fuels.

Putting surplus electricity to good use

Excess or cheaper electricity can be converted into process heat.

Less peripheral equipment

No need for a burner or flue gas system, which simplifies the installation.

How do you integrate an electric thermal oil boiler into your existing infrastructure?

Depending on the available space and the configuration of your installation, the boiler can be set up either horizontally or vertically. This makes it relatively easy to integrate it into existing technical rooms or new energy plants.

In addition, an electric thermal oil boiler is often combined with the existing heat sources of a thermal oil circuit, allowing you to make optimal use of the available energy while safeguarding operational reliability.

The most suitable configuration will depend on available grid capacity, heat consumption and the existing energy infrastructure. The Callens Group’s specialists map out these parameters and advise you on the technically and economically most attractive solution.

FAQ

Questions? We have the answers.

That is possible, but it will depend on factors such as the required power, available grid capacity and your consumption profile. In some cases, a fully electric solution will be preferable, in others, a hybrid configuration. Not sure whether full or partial electrification is the way to go? Our specialists are happy to carry out an initial technical analysis of your installation. By all means make an appointment.

An electric thermal oil boiler produces no direct CO2 emissions on site because no combustion takes place. If your installation is powered by 100 % green electricity, the CO2 emissions of your heat production can even be reduced to zero. Your actual CO2 reduction will depend on the type of installation you are contemplating replacing, your consumption and the source of the electricity you are using. Curious how much CO₂ your company could save? Our engineers will be happy to make an estimate based on your current heat production.

Yes. Electric thermal oil boilers are particularly well suited to converting self-generated solar or wind energy, or cheap electricity during certain market periods, into usable process heat.

As an EPCS integrator, the Callens Group takes charge of the entire process: from on-site analysis and engineering to installation and service. This gives you a single point of contact throughout the entire service life of your electric thermal oil boiler. You’ll find more information about the various steps in our workflow here.

For a manufacturer of sealants for the construction sector, the Callens Group realized an installation to keep a 60 m³ chemical storage tank and the associated filling and circulation lines at a constant temperature of 45 °C. To do so, we opted for an 18-kW electric thermal oil boiler with a flow rate of 12 m³ per hour, coupled to a 100-liter buffer tank and various pump combinations that circulate the thermal oil through the tank coil and double-walled piping.
