Steam boiler feels the heat of hydrogen
This potato processor gains a head start on innovations that are still on the horizon. With a gas-fired boiler fully prepared for hydrogen as a fuel. Feasible and affordable.
Upsized steam boiler, ready for the future
We equipped the 25 T/h steam boiler with a larger pressure body – one with a 30 T/h capacity. By adjusting the furnace as well, we made the boiler 100% future-proof. After all, hydrogen as a fuel source is on the horizon.
An added benefit: Callens is delivering the full balance of plant, enabling maximum energy efficiency. Thanks to the condensate tank, for example, we recover a substantial amount of heat and power.
Higher efficiency with economiser
We fitted the steam boiler with an economiser, fully integrated in the structure and thermally insulated. Beyond the economiser, we installed an opti-flow line leading to the deaerator and condensate tank to ensure continuous water circulation through the economiser – even when there’s no feedwater flowing into the boiler.
This setup offers multiple advantages:
- Prevents steam formation in the economiser
- Avoids thermal shock in the economiser
- Extends the service life
And just as important: we recover energy from the flue gases, even when the boiler is not taking in feedwater.
Bonus fact: to save energy at partial load, the burner fan can be operated with frequency control.
Low NOx emissions
The 5 T/h thermal oxidizer, designed and installed by Optimum, neutralizes potato odours and keeps NOx emissions under control. Contributing to this as well are the enlarged furnace dimensions of the steam boiler. On top of that, we increased flue gas recirculation to 12% to remain under the 60 mg/Nm³ threshold at 3% O2.
